pH Testing is Crucial for Plant Growth

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Make sure that your plants are growing in the proper temperature, correct air circulation and that humidity buildup is not too extreme with the right fans, hygrometers, thermometers and more.

Keep your hydroponics crops healthy to provide for utmost production of fruits or vegetables with the right climate controllers.

pH testing is one of the critical climate controllers you need to control. Is the pH balance in your garden right for your plants to make sure they perform to the best that can? With the appropriate pH test meters, you will get correct measurements of the pH balance. This will be effective to make necessary modifications to ensure the growth of your hydroponics garden.

A pH meter is an electronic instrument used to measure the pH, the alkalinity or acidity. A regular pH meter has special measurement probe a glass electrode associated to an electronic meter that quantifies and shows the pH reading.

The pH probe measures pH as the activity of hydrogen ions surrounding a thin-walled glass bulb at its tip. The probe produces a small voltage (about 0.06 volt per pH unit) that is valued and exhibited as pH units by the meter.

When the pH is not at the appropriate point, the crop will suffer its ability to absorb many of the necessary elements necessary for healthy increase in yield during harvest time. For all crops there is a specific pH level that will produce the best results. This pH level will vary from crop to crop, but most will favor a somewhat acid growing environment between the levels 6.0 - 6.5.

Ph meters are very easy to use and help enhance the growth of your plants for maximum production.

Don’t forget the Pond Liner

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

I remember my attempts at pond building as a child. I dug a hole at the bottom of my parents garden and then ran back and forth for the best part of a day trying to fill it with water using a watering can. Of course, all the water would simply disappear into the earth and being no more than 7 years old, I had no idea why my pond wouldn’t hold the water like the ‘natural’ ponds I would see outside.

What I didn’t realise back then was the water would never stop soaking into the porous earth. Without liner, just like the sand castle moats you build on the beach, the water simply drains away.

Ensuring the pond is lined is a fundamental of pond building. Pond liner is usually cut from a roll (much like a carpet) so you just have to calculate how much liner required for the size of your pond. This pond liner calculator will help, just measure the width, length & depth of the pond.

Do I need Liner Underlay?

Large pond projects definately require pond lining underlayis a must. Especially if there is the likelihood the liner could be punctured from rocks or tree roots!

You have the pond liner so what is next?

Once you have lined your pond and filled it with water it doesn’t end there. The water musn’t become stagnant so you need to ensure it is renewed or filtered continuously. Depending on the purpose your pond will almost certainly need a pump, particularly if you intend keeping fish! When choosing a pond pump you need to know the size of the pond. The pump must be powerful enough to pump and renew all the water in the pond within a certain time frame.

Had I known the correct way to construct a pond at 7 years old, I probably would have continued my quest. Alongside making mud pies that clearly nobody is going to eat. The race to return with another refill before the previous bucket of water disappeared into the ground along with soaking my parents kitchen was great fun!

Tools To Use For A Great Lawn

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Every homeowner aspires to have a great looking lawn and tries everything that he or she can do to attain such a lawn. So many people assume incorrectly that only a professional landscaper can create a great looking garden. This could not be less true. Hiring a professional will definitely ease your work, but you can have a beautiful lawn without the help of a professional, as well.

Even though there is no dearth of lawn care equipment, there are some that are absolutely vital for the upkeep of your lawn. If you dont't need these tools, lawn care would simply be impossible. Some of these crucial tools are lawnmowers, rakes, aerators and shears.

Aerators are also quite important for lawn health because they create cavities, holes on the top layer of the soil. This enables the soil to move better. In other words, it is because of aeration that water and nutrients penetrate the soil and reach the roots. Not only this, it also enhances the levels of oxygen in the soil, and therefore helps the roots to prosper and flourish.

Lawnmowers have great utility in giving a neat and tidy look to the blades of the grass. Since it trims the dead grass and helps in the growth of healthy grass, it provides a great service to your lawn. Even if you have decided not to buy a lot of tools for lawn care, lawnmower is an item that is practically indispensable when it comes to lawn care.

Shears are a type of tool that is used to maintain the hedges of the lawn by cutting and trimming it as necessary. If you have a creative streak in you, then you can even design your hedges according to your fancy with the help of shears. So, it is a very important tool for your lawn or garden.

Apart from all the tools mentioned above, rakes are the tools that play a great role in the health of your lawn. With the help of rakes, you can remove the leaves from your Los Altos garden. This is an important task as leaf pile-up will not let water and sunlight reach your grass and thereby the grass could ultimately wither away and die.

Finding these tools should not be difficult as any home hardware store or local home improvement store will stock these important tools. So, if you use these tools for maintaining your lawn, there is no reason why you should not have a glowing and healthy garden throughout the year and that too, without the assistance of professionals who specialize in metal landscape edging.
