Herb Gardens: Attractive and Delicious

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Herbs can be a beautiful addition to your garden. They don’t just look good, they also smell wonderful. As well, they’re very functional, not only for the flavor they impart during cooking but also for their ability to address certain health problems. There are so many different kinds of herbs to choose from. Basil and oregano are a couple of the species that are well suited to cooking. Some herbs, such as lavender and chamomile, are also useful for their health benefits. Herb gardening really depends on your personal preferences.

In general, herbs are easy to maintain and will thrive without a lot of effort on your part. Among the many kinds of herbs, you’re sure to find at least one that will suit whatever location you have in mind for it. They’re perfect for a border around your flowers, nestled in a rock garden or adding variety to a container garden.

Plus, they have so many uses. They can be grown outdoors in the warm weather, and indoors during the winter. While the summertime is when you’ll plant them outdoors, you can also grow them indoors in a sunny location all through the year. Lots of people like to set their indoor herbs outside when it’s warm, where they’ll be even more bountiful. Others like to get a head start on their outdoor herb garden by starting seeds inside in late winter. Just make sure that the herbs you select can be easily replanted with no harmful effects.

Herbs can be planted just about anywhere where they’ll get some sun. They’ll thrive both in your vegetable garden and in a small corner of the yard. You can plant them in neat rows or in a decorative pattern that will give your landscape an aromatic beauty.

Before you start planting, watch the intended location over a couple of days to be certain that it gets the right amount of sun. As well, avoid any really wet locations on your property. And keep in mind that if you plan on using your herbs for cooking, locating them near to the house will make it easier to step outdoors and snip off what you need.

Just be careful because some herbs aren’t suitable for certain climates. But the majority will flourish under generally acceptable conditions. However, if you’re uncertain about whether specific herbs are suitable for your area, check with your local nursery.

There are any number of different herbs, so it won’t be hard to find one that suits the location you have in mind. So you can have the pleasure of their aroma and culinary delights throughout the year.

Creating Outdoor Fountains From The Ground Up

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

If you like outdoor fountain, making one isn’t that difficult. If you want an outdoor fountain, you may be able to find the materials to build one in the home. Of course, you may decide that buying the materials is a better way to get the design you’re looking for. With outdoor fountains, you have an excellent way to make your garden beautiful. Look no further if you want to learn about the basic construction of outdoor fountains.

There are some materials that are required before you can begin your outdoor fountains project. They include the retaining pool, water pump, tubing, waterproof electric connectors, silicone sealant, as well as any extra decorative features you wish to add.

Before you start digging, you want to choose the location for your outdoor fountains with care. Before the hole for the retaining pool is made, you should contact your local utility company to have them check for underground power cables. This service is free of charge so it may really pay off to have it done since you would like to avoid paying for any severed lines.

When the utility company say it’s clear, you can begin digging. If you purchased the retaining pool from a hardware store, any hole you make for outdoor fountains should be just slightly larger and deeper to accommodate the pool.

Looking again at the retaining pool, make a small opening in the side to insert the power cable for your water pump. The goal is to take your cable and run it to the middle of the retaining pool. Remember that you need to use waterproof wiring to avoid shocking hazards. After you have properly situated the cable, the hole can be filled in with silicone sealant.

You can insert the retaining pool into the hole prepared for it. You will want outdoor fountains that are securely situated, so you make sure that the retaining wall fits snugly. The gaps left on the outside of the retaining pool are filled in with dirt. You should be confident that you’re making progress on your outdoor fountains project at this point.

The next step should be installing the pump. Once you have the pump situated in the pool center, you can wire it up with those waterproof connectors. Based on the design of different outdoor fountains, you may use different materials to hide the pump. Your pump’s power cables should be buried after the pump is completely installed so they are protected from the elements.

When it is time to fill the outdoor fountains with water, you will be checking for leaks at first. If there are no changes in the water levels, you can start the pump. Of course, you will need to watch the pump to see if it works properly. The placing of the pump in outdoor fountains is important because it can affect how the fountain performs.

After all is said and done and you’ve built outdoor fountains, the final step is to enjoy them. Well-maintained outdoor fountains offer years of enjoyment for you and your family. They not only look stylish, but they can increase the value of your home.

Building A Bamboo Fountain

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

You should consider using a bamboo fountain to liven up your garden.  These unique types of fountains were originally developed in Japan where they were used as deterrent to keep deer away from the fields of rice paddies.  It isn’t surprising that they were called “deer chasers”.

In the past, monks would use the bamboo fountain as a method for measuring the length of their mediations.  Today, more people are intrigued by the bamboo fountain because it is made of eco-friendly material.  Still, the bamboo fountain possesses a simple design and charm that attracts people.  The bamboo fountain is a flexible model so you can use them both indoors and outdoors.

If you want to make a bamboo fountain, all you need are few simple components.  You will need bamboo, tubing, a pump, a base, rod, screws, and container.  If you are constructing an outdoor bamboo fountain, it is wise to use a quality bamboo that will not crack under variable weather conditions.  When the bamboo fountain will be used inside, you may want to make it more attractive by polishing the surface.  Before you start constructing your bamboo fountain, you should also have the right tools including a screwdriver, a drill, and a wood saw.

The first step after you have all the parts for your bamboo fountain is to cut the bamboo sticks to required lengths.  Three large bamboo sticks are necessary for construction.  A stick will hold the nozzle while two other will hold the moving piece on the bamboo fountain.  The moving part of the bamboo fountain will gather and remove water once the water collected increases to certain level.  All three bamboo pieces will need to have holes drilled through the centers.  You need holes in your bamboo sticks pieces because a rod will be inserted in them to make the fountain operate with pivot action.

Your pipe will be ran through the middle of the bamboo stick to the pump.  The top of the pipe is fitted with a bamboo nozzle.  Now that this is all done, you can mount the fountain to a base.  Your bamboo fountain is properly constructed when water coming out of the nozzle falls inside the part of the fountain in motion.

Should you rather skip the building process for your bamboo fountain, you can always buy one at a home design store that carries bamboo fountains.

If you do get a bamboo fountain, you might like to know how to maintain one.  Maintenance focuses on two areas.  The first area is water pump care.  The pump must be kept underwater when in operation.  Lastly, clean the pump regularly.  The second aspect of bamboo fountain care is scheduled water replacement.  While you won’t have to change the water on a bamboo fountain that constantly operates, you still need to schedule a time so you’re not dealing with stinky water.

Dendrobium orchid care

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

The dendrobium orchids represent a major family with about 1200 species, they grow in regions between the southern, eastern and south-east Asia, including the Philippines, Borneo, Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand. Their name comes from the Greek words dendron (tree) and bios (life). These species are epiphytes (grow on trees) or lithophytes (grow on rocks) and grow in environments ranging from the heights of the Himalayas, low tropical forests, and even in the dry Australian desert.

dendrobium orchid care is rather an easy task.In fact you can get very good results with little attention with dendrobium orchids. Most dendrobiums thrive and bear flowers even if they get little attention from their owners.
Below you’ll find some tips on dendrobium orchid care.

Temperature: This plant does the best at a temperature of 18 to 20 degrees Celsius. Temperature extremes are tolerated if exposure is not prolonged.

Light: Orchids need light, but during the season where they grow (March-September), they should not receive direct light. During this season, the sun is too strong and could dry out the leaves.
Dendrobiums take full advantage of full sunlight in the morning, but they ask for the shadow between 11 am and 15H - less shade will be needed at the end of afternoon.

Watering: The Phalaenopsis dendrobium Orchids grow best when their soil dries out between waterings. They are epiphytes in nature, (they grow on trees) and are habituated to becoming fairly dry between the rains of their natural home ground.

For most people, watering is a difficult operation.Too often, the plant gets too much water. The roots of the orchid should NEVER float in water. The bottom of the pots are generally perforated to evacuate excess water. If the orchid is placed in a flower-pot holder, water will remain in the pot and the roots may rot.

Our advice:

Extract the orchid from its flower-pot holder (leaving the plant in its original pot), bathe the plant in a tray filled with water for 5 to 10 minutes (at a temperature of 18 to 20 degrees). Then let the flower drain and put it back in its flower-pot holder.Proceeding this way you will never give too much water to your plant.

Pay attention to the amount of water in the tray.
Only a maximum of 75% of the pot can be placed in water.
Depending on your home (temperature and humidity) and the weather (too much or too little sunlight) you have to bathe your plant 1x per week. You can decide on your flower watering needs by monitoring its weight. It is just a matter of getting used to!

Repotting: Repot once every two years in spring, after flowering, or when growth begins. A mixture of 10 parts of fine quality fir bark and 1 part of orchid mix will work well in small pots.

Feeding: nitrogen fertilizer (25-9-9) can be used throughout the year. Use a teaspoon for three liters of water. Feed once a month.
