The Benefits Of A Cold Greenhouse

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

I have gained so much pleasure from my greenhouse, that I would heartily recommend that every gardener should have one. Don’t be put off by the cost of green house kits or the cost of heating during the winter, since even a cold greenhouse can provide some great benefits. A cold greenhouse is really a technical term. It means that the greenhouse is not heated in winter. Also, other than by using shading and ventilation it is not artificially cooled in the high summer.

A cold greenhouse will save you money and enlarge the number of plants that you can grow successfully. Greenhouse gardening need not be expensive. Even without the use of artificial heating it will protect tender plants from the wind and you can extend the growing season because of the heat that is stored from the early and late summer sunshine.Hence the cold greenhouse will extend the growing seasin over that you can achieve outside; and you will be able to reliably successfully grow semi tropical fruit and vegetables such as melon and peppers, not to mention tomatoes and cucumbers.

Instead of going out and buying bedding plants, you can easily germinate and raise seeds in the cold greenhouse in large enough numbers that you will have plenty to sell or share with friends and neighbours.

When striking cuttings, the process can be helped somewhat in the cold greenhouse by adding a little botom heat by way of small tray heaters.Though many cuttings are perfectly successful without that adition.

The cold greenhouse can be a great help in germinating seeds such as sweetcorn that need a little heat to germinate. You effectively extend the growing season by getting started with the seed sowing that bit earlier. Don’t forget that, As every gardener knows, sweet corn cooked within minutes of harvesting, tastes so much better than those bought fresh or frozen. The traditional and established  way of raising early seeds on the windosill has some significant drawbacks. Your seedlings become very leggy, and always bending towards the light unless you are continually rotating them. In the greenhouse this problem is solved since the ligh is more even.

So if you haven’t tried a Greenhouse, it will pay its own way in a short time and will increase your sense of satisfaction and accomplishment in gardening. So build a greenhouse now.

How to Get Started With Greenhouses

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Many folks want to own portable garden greenhouses now that their cost has come down. But before you decide to buy or build a starter greenhouse, it’s important that you take a look at your available space and your budget before you visit the store. When choosing the size of greenhouse that is right for you, you must think about these two main points carefully. Heating and ventilation needs and water supply need to also be taken into consideration. After you do this preliminary planning, you can then decide the type of greenhouse that will fit your needs.

After this, you must decide if your greenhouse will be connected or stand-alone. You will be able to walk straight into an attached greenhouse, while a separate one will require you to go outside. Another option is an indoor greenhouse, which is perfect if you do not have a lot of available space outdoors, or your region experiences very cold winters.

A classic barn style greenhouse is the most popular style of greenhouse. Prefabricated, movable greenhouses are fairly low-maintenance and not difficult to set up, so most folks really like them. However if gardening with a greenhouse is something you’re deciding to do as more than just an occasional hobby, it makes sense to invest in a permanent building because you will get more durability in the long haul. When folks think of greenhouses they often think of the glass types they’ve seen on TV or in glossy magazine pictures, however you don’t need to limit yourself to this extremely costly option. A lot of pre-made greenhouses are made of aluminum framing with polycarbonate panels.

Those who enjoy greenhouse gardening will strongly recommend you to get the biggest greenhouse you can afford and have room for. In the long run, it will be more costly to add on to a smaller sized greenhouse, than to just purchase a larger one in the first place. Larger sized greenhouses can often turn people off, as they might not want to commit to growing that many plants. Yet the biggest problem many folks have is getting rid of plants when their greenhouse gets full.

You need to make sure that the plants you select for your garden greenhouse suit your level of gardening knowledge. You’ll be wasting your time if you are not committed to caring for the plants. Another thing to remember when erecting a greenhouse is that it’s important to enquire as to which bylaws may pertain to your area, so that you do not have any unpleasant surprises.

The Importance of Pond Filters

Monday, October 26th, 2009

If you love aquariums, you’ll love pond fish also. Placing fish in a pond let’s them live and thrive in an atmosphere more closely to the way nature intended them to live. In addition, you still have the pleasure of enjoying their presence every day. The most popular fish for ponds are the koi and goldfish species, but other species can thrive also.

Eventually, when you get around to adding fish to your pond, one of the first things you’re going to need to buy is a fish pond filters. A pond filter is indispensable in helping to keep the pond’s ecosystem clean and pristine for the fish that inhabit it. If you don’t have a good filter, you simply can’t maintain good water quality. Water filters will get rid of debris, waste, ammonia, odors, and many other pollutants from the water.

f you care how your pond looks visually, you’ll want to get a pond filter. Otherwise, you may eventually see your pond populated by ugly algae floating on the top and around the sides of your pond.

There are a few essential features to look for when choosing a filter. Of them all, size and capacity is the most important. You want to be sure that the pond filter you buy is powerful enough to handle your sized pond without strain. For mechanical filters, you’ll also want one where it’s easy to replace the filter medium. If the filter is in a difficult place to access, it’s likely that you will neglect changing it as much as you should. Luckily, nowadays, most filters are designed with the homeowner’s convenience in mind. The focus on most modern pond filters  is to make sure that the filters are as maintenance free as possible.

Size Matters

Unless you have a gigantic pond, a pond filter should normally be able to completely filter the area in two hours or less. If it can’t, your filter is either too small or too inefficient and you should replace it.

When shopping for pond filters, you’ll find that they are made in two primary styles, submersible and external. If your pond is a large one, more than likely you’ll want to get the external model. But you shouldn’t entrust 100% of the responsibility of cleaning the pond to your filter. At specified intervals, you should skim fallen leaves, branches, and so on from the surface. In addition, you can populate your pond with a few plants that will naturally consume fish waste. This all  helps to put less strain on your filter.

Pond filter maintenance is important. Having a written schedule that shows when you last maintained it, when you last replaced a filter, and so on will not only help to keep your pond filter functioning in top shape, it will also make sure that your warranty remains valid.

There is no one most effective pond filter that will do everything as far as keeping your pond water clear and pristine. The most effective cleaners you can have for your pond is a combination of different types of filters. Mechanical filters to filter out the debris and toxins and a biological pond filter to get control some of the chemicals produced by the fish.

Flower Bed Design - Practical Gardening Possibilities

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Do you suffer from troublesome soil, bad drainage, or simply not enough room for all the things you would like to grow in your yard? Then why not resolve all your problems with the simple add-on of a raised flower bed. Landscape Gardeners enjoy raised flower beds, because they can be any design you wish, and they can subtly draw the eye to the beauty of an area, or aside from a less appealing facet of the landscaping.

Although they are named raised flower beds, they should be used for much more than growing blooms. They are an excellent way to produce herbs and veggies, or merely anything you can grow in your yard. If the soil in your yard is poor, or perhaps your poor drainage results in your plants being drowned before they receive a chance to mature. A raised bed is an outstanding way to alleviate these problems.

While numerous raised flower beds may be costly in their making, because of the price of the materials involved to fabricate them, there are many materials you can find around your dwelling to make raised flower beds at a lower cost. One outstanding example of this that I have discovered of late is an used claw foot bathtub filled with earth and reformed into a raised flower bed. For those of you who might be interested, it is actually possible to make a special material to replace the soil in all kinds of flowers pots and planters - Hypertufa is a great and inexpensive option.

An appealing and widely available material for building your raised flower bed or similar open-air projects is cedar. It weathers extremely well, and has a natural beauty that can’t be bested. One drawback to it, though, is it’s cost. That factor alone may make it necessary for some people to discover an alternate source of materials. Another commonly used material for raised flower beds is railroad ties. It is true several people have stated concern over the use of chemicals in treating railroad ties and like preserved lumber types. While it may be inevitable to consider this if you plan to grow vegetables, for flowers I don’t personally believe it is a concern.

A few other choices that make good-looking raised beds are brick, block, decorative stone or just plain old rocks. Numerous householders might be able to look around their place and acquire most of the material they need to make a exquisite flower bed. Several of these materials may require mortar to connect them, while others may be utterly fine with merely the piling method.

The latest in outside material is PVC. Because its composition is plastic, it won’t wear down as swift as other materials. It’s durability is outstanding, yet there are troubles to its usage. One such drawback is the limited palette of colors. Another would be the requirement of specialized instruments for sawing and connecting it. You would be better of to check out the colors and necessary instruments if looking at PVC for your outside building plans.

While it is a usually given practice to restrict the height of a raised flower bed to no more than eighteen inches, it is manageable, with a lot of extra attention paid to base and stability, to make one of a greater height.

For the 16 - 18 inch bed bed, the structure is pretty elementary. When you have settled on your material and your structure, lead off with digging a ditch big enough to immerse a few inches of the material. This helps to entrench the material to the soil, giving it the required stability. Numerous people select to secure their material in the ditch, and there are numerous ways to accomplish this. For a permanent bed, you could use cement, or you could use a large piece of iron rod. Simply drill a hole in the material, the same diameter as the rod, and drive the rod down through the material. Then carry on building higher.

Much more advice and inspiration on garden work and Hypertufa pots in specific will be offered freely on our website. On the site you will learn about Hypertufa pots and countless different constructive gardening hints.
