How To Root A Plumeria Cutting:

Plumeria trees are tropical and therefore must have similar conditions in order to flourish. Plumeria do best in full sun with at least a half day's sun exposure to bloom properly. They do well when potted in an appropriate size pot to the size of the tree in well drained soil (see below). The following is a list of items important to growing plumeria:

It is not recommended to try and root your cutting in the winter unless you have florescent lighting and heat mats. If you have a cutting and it is not a good time of year to plant. Just put it in the pantry or closet until late spring. Cuttings can sit for many months and still root and grow fine!

Plumeria need as much full sun as possible. Min 6 hrs.

If you read and implement anything on this page, this should be the thing - Plant cuttings in an excellent draining soil mix. We recommend a mix of 1/3 sand, 1/3 perilite and 1/3 regular potting soil. A cactus soil mix will also work well.

Use a 1 or 2 gallon plastic pot, not clay.

You can wet the soil initially and lightly pack it down to help support the cutting.

A 12 to 16 inch Plumeria should be submerged 3 to 3.5 inches into the soil.

Be careful not to knock over your cutting! You can put some rocks around the base for extra support.

VERY IMPORTANT - Do not water your Plumeria while they are rooting until the soil is bone dry. At that point you can water very lightly. Then allow to become dry again, etc.

The rooting process should take 6 to 8 weeks in late spring and summer.

It is best to wait until the minimum nightly temps are at least 65 degrees for best rooting conditions

Rooting hormone is recommended but not normally necessary for successful rooting.

Begin regular light watering when there are 3 or 4 open leaves.

Once the leaves have become numerous and full size regular watering can commence.

Watering volume depend on the time of year and weather conditions. Rule of thumb is soak your Plumeria and wait until the soil becomes dry before watering again. If it is mid summer this may be 2 times a day. In early spring it may only need water 1 time a week. If you are using the soil mix above, over watering will not be easy to do.

Plumeria might do well inside if there is lots of direct sunshine but they are primarily outdoor lovers.
